CastAlice Eve, Stanley Tucci Film descriptionNeil LaBute claims his films sometimes ruin a perfect day, like Velvet’s, which begins to the theme of Truffaut’s The Soft Skin. Velvet takes off her headphones to find former lover Frank at the door saddled with expectation-filled suitcases. So begins a study in emotions a la LaBute, who returns as the master of showing male-female relations with a clash-of-the-Titans bent. Velvet (Alice Eve has something of Nastassja Kinski here) and Frank (the excellent Stanley Tucci) have 83 minutes and one apartment at their disposal for an underhanded game of words, gestures, innuendo and irony. While both mercilessly retort, just as in LaBute’s other films, there is no easily discernible winner.
