Rob Epstein, Jeffrey Friedman

Rob Epstein was born in New Jersey in 1955. He began his film career at the age of 19, when he became the youngest member of the Mariposa Film Group. This group, in 1977, made Word Is Out, which is recognized as the first documentary film about the American gay community. He won an Oscar in 1984 for his documentary The Times of Harvey Milk. He won a second Academy Award in 1989 for Common Threads: Stories from the Quilt, which he made together with Jeffrey Friedman.


Jeffrey Friedman

Jeffrey Friedman was born in Los Angeles in 1951. In 1987, he worked as an editor on the television show We the People, which was directed by Rob Epstein. Together  they founded a production company called Telling Pictures. The duo focuses mainly on making documentary films on gay themes. In 2010, Epstein and Friedman’s Howl, a biopic about Allen Ginsberg, was released to great success.
